If you are considering liposuction, you probably have a number of questions you'd like answered. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about liposuction.
How is liposuction done?
A tube is inserted through tiny incisions and pushed through the fat layer, breaking up cells and vacuuming them up. The following are three different methods that can be used to perform
liposuction.
The super-wet technique involves the injection of fluid to aid in extraction. It is the fastest method but requires general anesthesia.
The tumescent method involves injecting a great deal of fluid that contains a numbing agent and a blood vessel constrictor. It takes the most time but does not necessarily require general anesthesia.
The UAL method involves ultrasound to break up fat cells. It is often combined with the tumescent method.
Does liposuction require a hospital stay?
Complex or extensive surgery may involve a one to two day hospital stay. Other liposuctions may be completed on an outpatient basis and take one to two hours.
What are the risks of liposuction?
The common risks associated with liposuction include shock, fluid overload, infection, blood clots, fat embolisms, nerve damage, skin damage, tissue or organ damage, uneven fat removal, and scarring.
Is liposuction painful?
Pain depends upon the type of anesthesia used and the extent of the surgery. Local anesthesia lasts for more than a day after surgery; general anesthesia alone requires prescription painkillers.
Soreness is most intense in the first two to four days after surgery, and then decreases to lower levels for four to eight weeks. Non-prescription medication will help this.
How long is recovery after liposuction?
Patients return to work within one to two days and resume normal activities within two weeks. Bruising and swelling are dependent upon the extent of the procedure and may last two to four weeks. A supportive garment is worn for three to six weeks. Gentle workouts can be resumed within two weeks and full workouts after one month.
How much does liposuction cost?
Liposuction costs vary from depending on the extent and area of surgery and skill level of the surgeon.
